Te Manu Atatū Whanganui Māori Business Awards

Nau mai e te taonga hei painga mo nga iwi me nga hapori o Raetihi, Ohakune me Waiouru. Tenei te po! Nau mai te ao!
We have been very humbled to have been awarded the 2017 Te Manu Atatū Whanganui Māori Business Award for the best Māori Rising Star – Best Emerging and New Māori Enterprise.
Congratulations to Kathy and the team. Congratulations to all of us! Whakamihi also to Dan, Annie and the team at Ohakune New World for taking out the award for being the Most Community Minded Māori Business.

The innovative vision of Ngāti Rangi and our communities has been celebrated at the Te Manu Atatū Maori Business Awards. In Whanganui on Saturday night the iwi-owned company Ruapehu Recruitment won the prize for Best Emerging and New Māori Enterprise.
It was also named runner up in the Most Community Minded Maori Business category which was won by another local firm, Ohakune New World. Ruapehu Whānau Transformation Plan project manager Erena Mikaere-Most said everyone involved has been humbled by the honour.
“Ruapehu Recruitment seeks to link our local people, our local whānau with local employment and training opportunities.
“The company was established in 2015 as one of 23 sustainable solutions to advance ourselves and our communities and is 100% owned by the Ngāti Rangi Trust. Ultimately through the Plan’s solutions we are seeking to help enable transformation for everyone in our communities of Raetihi, Ohakune and Waiouru regardless of ethnicity.”
There are four main areas of the business. The first two (recruitment and work placement) provide commercial services to local companies like Ohakune New World, WPI and RAL [Ruapehu Alpine Lifts].
“This is so we can provide the second two (training and development). These are about providing free or subsidised training services for our local whānau.”
Since Ruapehu Recruitment’s inception they have held highly successful Careers Expos annually.
“Through this we have been able to achieve 220 positive employment outcomes, this equates to about $5.5-million of income going into local homes, to local whānau. Local Careers Expos bring together our local employers and businesses to meet face to face with our whānau and job seekers. The change and positivity this brings into the homes of whānau is almost unmeasurable.”
Ngāti Rangi Trust’s Che Wilson said he was full of emotion and humbled by the award.
“Many of our people thought they were unemployed because they were not good enough for the jobs and moved away from home to secure work. The heart cries. These are real people, real families, real transformation."
