Just how many cattle farms are there? Has TB ever been found and why should we care?
Bovine TB is caused by the organism Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis). This organism can infect many animals including possums, deer, pigs, cattle, ferrets, cats and humans. Possums are quite susceptible and when they are infected they can spread TB from pus oozing from open lesions or from their breath if they have lung lesions. Cattle or deer sniffing sick or dying possums can get infected as can scavengers such as pigs and ferrets eating the infected carcasses.
